Transporting ‘Hope in a Tanker’ makes us consider our values


Cargo Carriers, South Africa’s premium transportation, logistics and supply chain service provider, recently responded to South Africa's water crisis by joining hands with various businesses and organisations to supply water to various drought-stricken communities in our country, which again highlights the value of working together to make a difference.

Cargo Carriers partnered with Water Shortage South Africa (#WSSA 2016), Oasis Water Witbank and Engen Petroleum in a life-changing initiative termed “Hope in a Tanker”, bringing much-needed water to people in the drought-stricken communities in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal. The parties share a common belief that business and organisations play a key role in corporate responsibility; highlighting again the value of creating joint ventures in corporate social investment initiatives.

The success of ‘Hope in a Tanker’ led to an additional campaign driven by Cargo Carriers, ‘Delivering the gift of life’, which saw the company transport bottled water to a school in the farming community of Zastron in the Free State, another area that has fallen casualty to the drought. Partnering with local sporting celebrity, former Springbok Rugby player Os du Randt, the water provided much needed relief to the lives of many.

Water, the elixir of life, is a basic commodity essential for survival of people, planets and earth. As a country in dire need of water resources, it is imperative that all segments of the marketplace employ the spirit of Ubuntu, or ‘working together’ as a collective, to bring aid to our fellow citizens.

Belated president Nelson Mandela’s legacy bears testament to the value of industries collaborating to accelerate the growth of South Africa. One is reminded of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, where Tata Madiba donned the green jersey, symbolic of a united South Africa, all working together for the success of our country.

“We encourage all segments of the South African economy to create partnerships or joint ventures with corporates and NGOs to assist with areas of need. We are inspired by Madiba’s legacy and want to do our bit. We started out by opening up dialogue with potential participants in the Hope in a Tanker campaign, and were delighted by their instant feedback. People want to make a difference and effect change. It’s simple: be proactive and initiate talks,” says Marketing Director of Cargo Carriers, Andre Jansen van Vuuren, when expressing his views on successful collaborations.

“Cargo Carriers has a strong philanthropic outlook and believes in walking the talk by embracing our values of absolute integrity, loyalty, innovation, commitment, mutual respect, competence and accountability. For us, Hope in a Tanker and Delivering the Gift of Life are indicative of our loyalty and commitment to our fellow citizens of South Africa. Additionally, our partnerships were innovative and practical; which is what made the initiative work,” he says.

Ensuring that people have basic commodities will ensure the economy is kept buoyant and industries can continue undisrupted, thereby contributing to the financial success of the country during difficult times, according to Jansen van Vuuren.

The greatest positive outcome of the worst drought in decades is the togetherness shown by South Africans, organisations and businesses. Some call it Ubuntu, or ‘working together’.
