Emperors Palace has done it again! The popular Gauteng based resort, conveniently located alongside O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, has won two 5-star awards for Convention Hotel and Airport Hotel in the International Hotel Awards in the 2013 African regional competition.

“Yet another round of awards to add to our collection this year!” quips Wayne Hill, General Manager Hotels and Resort Operations for Emperors Palace. Hill continues, “Emperors Palace competed against a number of hotels and resorts in South Africa to receive this recognition and prestigious title and who knows where this might lead to, perhaps even competing against Arabia, Asia, Europe, UK and the Americas to find the ultimate World’s best?”

Taking place in October in Dubai, the high-profile gala dinner and awards ceremony will place winners under further examination where just one hotel from each category will be selected to represent the Africa region in the 2013 International Hotel Awards. Regional winners will then compete in the International Final ‘World’s Best’ Hotel Awards in London this November to find the ultimate World’s Best in each category.

The International Hotel Awards global competition determines the finest hotels and hospitality companies in the world. They were developed to identify, highlight and reward excellence throughout the global hospitality industry throughout a wide range of areas. In addition to categories for several types of specialty hotels and categories by hotel size, there are also categories for hotel architecture, construction, interior design, marketing and website. The awards are open to hoteliers, hotel developers and builders, interior designers, architects, public relations and advertising agencies and web designers. The awards are split into regions covering Asia Pacific, Arabia, Africa, the Americas, Europe and the UK. Participants enter at their relevant national level and are judged by a highly experienced team of professionals who cover the whole range of hospitality disciplines. Judging is carried out through a meticulous process involving a panel of experts from the hospitality and property industries.

“I would like to thank all the staff that worked hard to ensure we received this award. The entry process was extremely rigorous. The submission requirements included; guest satisfaction, design, responsible tourism overviews, health and safety practices, sustainability, innovation strategies and a study of our market segments. These, along with CV’s and an economic outlook for the property, probably made it one of our most comprehensive award submissions to date.”

“Emperors Palace continues to strive towards excellence and the number of awards won over the years has definitely showcased this. I am thrilled that Emperors Palace stands proud amongst the very best on the African continent and globally. The product has a timeless air that still attracts the most discerning of travellers,” comments Hill.

The International Hotel Awards has 17 categories and up to three 5-star awards for each category are awarded on a national level before competing at regional level. Included are also categories for hotel architecture, construction, interior design, marketing and website.  And who better to be the expert chairman of the judging panel than Sir David Michels, retired CEO of Hilton Hotels.

Stuart Shield, President of the International Hotel Awards adds “every country has a separate rating system for the standard of their hotels, but the International Hotel Awards have provided a global standard to even the mark from country to country. We welcome the Africa winners in joining this prestigious international club of exceptional hotels and resorts.”
