Judging by most of the media releases of the past year, our country’s main – and perhaps most crucial – focus was the recession that resulted in thousands of job losses for many South Africans. But somehow we have managed to shift our attention slightly to a more positive event that is to take place on our soil – the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup.
I have realised that our lives are built in such a way that when a rough tide hits us, we immediately hold up our guard for a lesser impact, but we also can shift our attention when a great opportunity is presented.
We all can agree that this country deserves a break. We deserve to look forward to a celebration.
In this first issue of the year, BBQ focuses not only on the soccer showstopper in June and July, but also the possibilities and opportunities that this event will bring, particularly in the area of job creation.
One of the interesting reads that many business owners and investors would find constructive is the feature on wealth management by
Absa Wealth.
Because South Africa is not the only country that experienced the economic downturn, we also look at how the rest of the world compares with regard to fluctuations in gross domestic product.
Skills and training remain one of South Africa’s greatest challenges, particularly in black business. Initiatives to train people in their roles have been implemented by the government, equipping them with better skills to carry out various tasks in their workplace. Speaking to director-general of the Department of Labour Jimmy Manyi, he pointed out some of the strategies in place to create better workers and a balanced working environment.
Working hard is what the country strives for, and a better future is yet to come. South Africa’s budding entrepreneurs would do well to have a look at our tips for good business networking – and grow your brand.
Although we have a long way to go to becoming a nation that works together, we are a strong nation. We welcome back BBQ editor Sibulele Shosha, who has returned from maternity leave. As I will be working closely with her, I look forward to more exciting issues of BBQ.
