Anglo American’s reputation for employing leaders in the mining industry has once again been demonstrated, with one of the company’s technical specialists at Technical Solutions: Research, Marek Dworzanowski, having been appointed president of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM).

Dworzanowski was inaugurated as the new President at the SAIMM Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 22 August, 2013.

The SAIMM is the professional home of the majority of mining engineers and metallurgists in Southern Africa. The responsibility of the President of the SAIMM, together with his or her fellow office bearers, is the general management of the institute.

As incoming President, Dworzanowski will set the strategic direction for the Institute for the 12 months of his term.

This will mainly involve SAIMM conferences and publications, increasing membership, opening new branches in Southern Africa and greater cooperation globally with sister Institutes. He will also provide a monthly feedback to members in the SAIMM Journal.

Dworzanowski notes that his election as President is a proud moment and that he will be focused on adding value to the organisation during his tenure.

“Being elected the President of the SAIMM is a great honour indeed.

"As the new incoming President for 2013/2014 I will strive to further grow the membership and influence of the Institute locally and in Southern Africa, as well as broaden the scope of cooperation globally with our sister Institutes.”

Dworzanowski was born and educated in the United Kingdom and has BSc Honours in Mineral Processing from the University of Leeds.

He has worked for various mining and mining related companies during his career, including Impala Platinum, Montan Chemicals, Joy Process Equipment, and Group 5 Projects.

He has served in a variety of roles, including concentrator metallurgist, development metallurgist, applications engineer and process engineer.

Since 1990, Dworzanowski was an independent consulting metallurgist for numerous mining companies, covering project consulting and implementation together with plant audits in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.

He joined Anglo American as a senior process engineer in 1999, and has held his current role, which focuses on magnetic separation research and consulting, since 2011.

In addition to his professional role within Anglo American, Dworzanowski is currently chairman of The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) Professional Advisory Committee for Metallurgy. He is also a registered professional engineer with ECSA and a fellow of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Anglo American executive director, Khanyisile Kweyama, concludes that Dworzanowski will excel in his role.

“Anglo American strives to employ people with vision and leadership skills, and Marek is certainly an individual who fits this particular bill, as he has an illustrious career and is at the forefront of innovation and technological development within the mining industry.

"We are extremely proud of his appointment as the SAIMM president, and have no doubt that he will be an incomparable leader, and add real value to the efficiency and impact of the organisation.”
