Tracker mentors tomorrow's men

Thursday 25April 2013 saw Tracker's Men in the Making campaign bring schoolboys from Grades 10 to 12 into a number of offices at different organisations across the country to be mentored by some of South Africa’s top business leaders. Tracker’s Men in the Making campaign was launched in 2009 and is supported by the Department of Basic Education, Shout SA and Metro FM. The campaign seeks to offer our young men the chance to interact with role models across society. The campaign has gained momentum year after year, and will take place again in 2014.

 

Dr Mamphela Ramphele gave the campaign her support: “I would like to commend Tracker’s Men in the Making initiative which creates mentoring opportunities for school boys in companies all over South Africa.  This is more than just a career day, as the aim is to help teenage boys understand the value of their education, to challenge them to overcome their obstacles and to work towards becoming productive adult citizens of our country.”

 

This year, the campaign was supported by mentors with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Yusuf Abramjee from Primedia gave his young mentee a taste of career opportunities that radio broadcasting offers.

 

The SABC gave a group of boys a snapshot of all the careers available in broadcasting, ending with three young men having the opportunity to be mentored by DJ Fresh during his drive show, The Fresh Drive on 5FM.

 

Matlhatse Ramokgopa (18) from Athlone Boys High School and Nkosinathi Sizani (19) from Magaliesburg State School, spent the day career-shadowing Destiny Man Editor, Kojo Baffoe, and learnt about all aspects magazine publishing.

 

A group of 36 boys from Magaliesburg State High spent the day at Tracker’s Head Office in Johannesburg, where they learnt all about different career opportunities in the organisation – from Marketing to Human Resources, Technical to Finance.  Tracker’s CEO, Alan Hutcheson, spoke to the boys about endurance and perseverance and building your own brand in order to succeed in their chosen career. During a media interview, Hutcheson stated: “You can’t put a monetary value on what a day like this gives these boys who leave their backgrounds for a day, to experience what their future could look like. Some of them have never left their districts, let alone the country. It’s about expanding horizons. We don’t do this for the board members or for anyone else’s benefit. We do this for our boys and for this country’s future.”

 

However, one of the most inspirational and relevant mentors for the day, was Philemon Mogoathle, a convicted prisoner currently out on parole, who volunteered his time and story to warn the boys not to fall into a life of crime as a way to make money.  Phil lost his youth and all the opportunities that go with it by spending the last 16 years in prison. He obtained a Human Resources Management degree while he was in prison, but because of his criminal record, it has been difficult for him to get employment. Mogoathle’s advice about prison is: “Don’t think you will come back and tell a story because you might not come back!”
