TRADEROOT ACTIVE™ turns kilometers into impact

At the inaugural achilles hope & possibility handcycle relay race | 25-26 May 2019 | Moses Mabhida stadium South Africa

Hosted at People’s Park at Durban’s iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium on the 25th and 26th May 2019, the inaugural Achilles Hope & Possibility 24-Hour Handcycle Relay brought home the real truth behind disability and athleticism: it’s harder than it looks.

With participants completing more than 3,500 kilometres during this 24-hour relay race, the Achilles Hope and Possibility Handcycle Relay Race sought to highlight the difficulties faced by disabled athletes in KwaZulu-Natal, and beyond. As the first event of its kind in South Africa, this unique relay race attracted more than 500 participants and spectators.

Delivering a typically beautiful winter’s day, the city of Durban rose to the occasion in many ways. Backed by support from eThekwini Municipality, Moses Mabhida Stadium, and a variety of caring corporate sponsors, this race delivered so much more than just another fundraising drive. With the emphasis on FUNdraising, participants took part as teams, with each lap around the 1-kilometre track tallying up to create one team winner.

Zimbabwean businessman living with Multiple Sclerosis, Oliver Sinclair, flew in and brought four disabled athletes along, to participate. Having met his teammates while completing the Victoria Falls Marathon, Oliver committed himself and his team to the task at hand, bringing home the race trophy and clocking more than 400 kilometres during their pursuits. In total, 12 teams raced around the track for 24 hours, all in the name of raising funds for Ethembeni School and physically challenged athletes. Notably, Ethekwini Spears, Durban’s Wheelchair Basketball team, raced through the full 24 hours, completing the relay race together.
