The dramatic events in Libya the last week understandably overshadowed another quite significant development on the African continent, with the announcement  earlier in October by US President Barack Obama of the deployment of around 100 “combat-equipped” US troops, mostly Special Operations Forces, to central Africa  to help the Ugandan army track down rebel leader Joseph Kony and his cultish Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

Before you even start the engine on Volkswagen’s new Cross Polo, it does not take much to be impressed. Unlike the previous Cross Polo, which used the base model Polo as its… uh, base… the 2011 vintage looks more like its own car, rather than a kitted out wannabe. The stylists really deserve a pat on the back because the Cross Polo’s look is smart and sophisticated in its own way, yet it maintains an appearance of distinctiveness on the road.

Africa is the least electrified place in the world. An estimated 550 million Africans have no access to electricity. Nearly half of African countries have a power crisis. Solving this huge problem is made more difficult by widespread poverty, and because most Africans live far from the grid, greatly adding to the cost of bringing electricity to them.

Editor's Note

New beginnings are not the most pleasant at times. To some, it means a new path from a failed attempt, a change of path to suit a lifestyle perhaps to please the rest, and maybe a new path to another beautiful journey. To me, it is the latter.
