Black Like Me enters the health and wellness market
Dynamic entrepreneurial duo Herman and Connie Mashaba, founders of renowned hair and skin care company Black Like Me, have entered new territory with the launch of Well Like Me. “Expanding to meet market needs”, Connie explains that international trends point to a significant growth in the emphasis on natural healing. “The natural healing profession has a proud history in South Africa, and the market for natural health products has been broadening and growing year-on-year,” says Connie. Today, many people are trying to improve their health by adopting healthier lifestyles and utilising the life-promoting qualities of natural remedies. Black Like Me has had plans to enter this market for some time. A meeting between Herman and Dr Marc Swanepoel consolidated this mission and recently saw the birth of Well Like Me.“The formation of Well Like Me will provide the platform to introduce these important products into the South African market,” says Connie. Reaching the market Existing business partner, Amka Products (Pty) Ltd, is set to manage the sales and distribution of Well Like Me products nationally. Black Like Me joined forces with Amka Products in 2005, in what was regarded as one of the biggest broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) ventures in the health and beauty industries at that time. Amka, considered a pioneer in the health and beauty industry, acquired a 49.9% share in Black Like Me. “Continuing as a separate entity, Black Like Me tapped into Amka’s research and development, manufacturing and distribution infrastructure, while we took the opportunity to focus on marketing our brands,” says Connie. Amka Products was established by the Kalla family as a small trading operation near Pretoria in the 1950s. Since inception, it has focused on the unique needs and opportunities inherent in Africa’s emerging markets. Today it is a major manufacturing and marketing enterprise exporting into many African countries. “In today’s world, there are so many factors that can impair or suppress the immune system, including severe physical or emotional stress, diseases and toxins,” says Swanepoel. Well Like Me’s first product is a natural herbal supplement developed to assist in boosting the immune system and maintaining energy levels. It is available in liquid and capsule form, and comprises medicinal herbs that have been used for centuries. “Many South Africans are already using natural products and it is important to ensure that they receive quality goods, backed by a company with a long track record,” adds Connie. Leaders behind the brand As an inspiration to all South Africans, Herman has shown what can be done with little money, and much courage and determination. It’s not surprising then that Dr Sam Motsuenyane, president of the Free Market Foundation, presented the 2003/2004 Free Market Awards to Herman, recognising individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the cause of economic freedom. Connie is an inspiration to the business community. Not only does she successfully fill the role of chief executive officer of Black Like Me, and now Well Like Me, but she is a dedicated wife and mother too. “Family is extremely important to Herman and me, and we spend as much time with our two children as we can,” she says. When she’s not liaising with business leaders in back-to-back meetings, you’ll probably find her on the golf course, strutting her stuff with a mere 18 handicap. Successful both on and off the field, Connie says, “Just as Black Like Me has worked to enhance beautiful looks, Well Like Me products will work to assist in supporting glowing good health.” Herman is most definitely one of Connie’s mentors. “[He] is such an inspiration to me, and many others. While he didn’t come from a business orientated family, he has made great strides and achieved so much,” she says. Another mentor is Dr Mamphela Ramphele, a successful and outspoken businesswoman and author. Swanepoel has been involved in medical research since 1985. He holds a BSc degree, majoring in mathematics and physics; a BA degree, majoring in psychology and philosophy, and a PhD degree, majoring in natural health. Swanepoel was also one of the seven founding members of the South African Free Market Foundation in 1975. He has written a book on the basics of a market economy entitled, The Common Sense of Wealth Creation, which has been translated into many languages, and has designed numerous enterprise development training courses. His With Justice For All course on economic literacy has been presented to more than 1.5 million South Africans over the years. The leadership packs a massive punch. “It is fantastic to be able to take a product of this nature to market. While business is about the bottom line, Well Like Me Immune Recovery is no empty promise,” Connie concludes.

|2010-06-03 07:01:40 Dr Helen Muir - Well like me Immune recoveryI read about this product while researching a remedy for one of my cancer patients on an American Natural Health website! I contacted Dr Marc Swanepoel, but thought I would do some research on the net about the product. I have not found much scientific data when i google Well Like me Immune recovery, only business details. I educate my patients to always check herbal products quality as some products GMP are not good and this can impact tremendously on the efficacy of the herb. Your product is not cheap so I would assume GMP has been enforced by the company manufacturing it. I would really like to know details of the product from a Health Provider side and also a website patients could go to to read about the benefits of Sutherlandia and Oleander. Patients want information and are very well read, so I think a link to an informative health site would be a worthwhile expense (probably covered by advertising links anyway!) I am a GP and Homeopath in Durbanville(CT) and practice Integra...
