EDITOR’S NOTE - June 2009

With the recession being an unpleasant reality, celebrating anything these days is increasingly becoming bleak and blurred. We at BBQ, however, have much to celebrate. IT IS OUR 10th ANNIVERSARY!

And what better way to celebrate it than with you, our loyal readers.

Looking back at pervious issues, I was humbled to see how this phenomenal brand has evolved over the years. With that said, BBQ has never faltered in honouring and celebrating black leadership in South Africa and the world.

For me, it was also amazing to see how much the blueprint of the South African business fraternity has changed over the past decade.

Recognition and merit has moved away from being something that is received in honour of the contribution one had made to the Struggle – now a combination of blood, sweat and dedication has become the only recipe for success.

This issue’s cover personality personifies how strategic career moves can allow one to be the most powerful and influential individual in the world of business. Tito Mboweni has come a long way from being the Minister of Labour to becoming the hero of our pockets and keeper of our interest rates, making him our man of the moment.

Celebrating his 10th year as the country’s first black governor of the Reserve Bank, Mboweni has laid the foundation for many aspirant number crunchers.

We also look at the road our current president, Jacob Zuma had to travel before he could claim the highest position in the land.

Watching the progress of the elections, I occasionally had to pat myself on the back for having had the opportunity to sit with him before he became the president of the country. I guess I have my claim to fame covered!

With the current ‘colourful’ youth leadership we have today, we look at whether South Africa is working towards grooming future leadership.

Unfortunately, we also had to cover the unpleasantries of the recession. Should South African business panic in these difficult times? See page 138.

What would an anniversary be without a gift? Have a look at our subscription competition and stand a chance to win a Samsung TOUCHWIZ.

Till next time.
